Artist of the Month
KAREN SHOOP!

I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. As a child, I have always had a love for nature. I used to make daisies into necklaces and bracelets and loved to paint rocks, string beads into necklaces, paint, draw and make little clams with "google eyes" glued on them from shells I had collected on vacation. I started taking ceramics classes in grade school and taught myself how to make jewelry from books I had borrowed from the local library.

By the time I reached high school, I had taken a ceramic/jewelry class, Art 1, Art 2, and Drawing and Painting. I also took Art Classes in the evening taught by Liz McClusky in Springdale, PA. I was in Art Club my senior year in high school and I had won a gold key in a Scholastic Art Show for a painting I did of a polar bear from a photograph I had taken at the Pittsburgh Zoo.

By my senior year, I started making jewelry for my mother all the time. She used to wear them to work and get compliments on them from the ladies she worked with. I started going to craft shows and selling my jewelry, painted flowerpots, cork wreaths and etched mirrors. Friends and co-workers started asking me to make jewelry and mirrors for them.

When I moved to Lancaster and discovered Lancaster Bead Company, I started taking classes there. The more I learned, the more I wanted to create. When people ask for special orders I like to ask them what their interests are, what their favorite color is, what color they like to wear the most and so on. I try to get to know the person before starting their request. This helps me personalize the jewelry to fit them and their personality.

Original jewelry designs are also available for purchase.
